Garfield telegrams Mr. Helm, in full: “Do you print a Record next Monday? Why not put our Speeches in that? Answer—.” Signed at the conclusion, “J. A. Garfield,” and also signed “Lamar.” Lamar was a Democratic Representative from Mississippi. During the Civil War he served in various Confederate positions and after the war returned to Washington in the Cabinet and Supreme Court.
